TikTok Shop affiliate: how it started, and where it is now
Updated
In short
TikTok Shop's affiliate program launched in the US with TikTok Shop itself on September 12, 2023. It started as a human job: creators requested samples, filmed themselves with the product and posted from their own accounts. Today many affiliates also use AI to make product videos from a listing photo, under TikTok's AI label and the same honesty rules as before.
How it started: shopping inside the feed
TikTok announced the full US launch of TikTok Shop on September 12, 2023. The launch post listed the pieces that still define it: shopping from tagged products in videos and LIVEs on the For You feed, a Shop Tab, a product showcase, Shop Ads, secure checkout, a logistics service called Fulfilled by TikTok, and an affiliate program.
The affiliate program is the part that created a new kind of job. TikTok described it as commission-based product marketing: sellers choose an affiliate plan for their products, and creators share those products in short videos and LIVEs. A creator did not need to own a brand, hold stock or ship anything. They needed an account, an audience and videos.
That last part, the videos, is where most of the work sat.
The human era: samples, filming days and one face
In the first years, an affiliate video was almost always a person on camera with the product. The formats that grew up on TikTok Shop reflect that: the mirror-selfie try-on, the product held up to the camera, the shoe shot from above, the unboxing, the photo carousel of an outfit. They work because they read as a post from a person, not an ad.
The sample economy
To film a product, you need the product. TikTok Shop built a whole system for that. Its Seller University describes two routes today:
- Free samples, requested from the seller. They need recent TikTok Shop sales (within the last 120 days), the seller can approve, reject or ignore the request, and the creator is expected to post promotional content within 14 days of receiving the product.
- Refundable samples, which skip seller approval. The creator buys the product and is refunded if their content drives the seller's sales goal within 120 days.
Both routes make sense for sellers, who want content for every sample they send. For affiliates, they meant waiting for parcels, fronting money, and a queue of deadlines.
The filming day
Then came the filming. A good try-on video needs a clean room, even light, a steady phone, a few outfit changes and several takes. A common approach was to set aside a whole day to batch-film, then spend evenings editing. Brands that wanted more content than their affiliates made hired UGC creators, paying per video at rates each creator set, and shipping product to each one.
It worked, but it scaled with hours. One person, one camera and one body could only film so many products a week, and every account showed whichever person was holding the phone.
What started to change
Three pressures pushed affiliates to look for another way to make videos:
- The catalogue outgrew the camera. There are far more products worth testing than any one person can film.
- Testing needs volume. Finding the hook that works on a product usually means several videos, not one.
- Not everyone wants to be on camera. Faceless accounts and people running several accounts needed videos that did not depend on their own face. See AI videos for faceless TikTok Shop accounts.
At the same time, AI video models got good enough to generate a believable person wearing a product in a room, from a photo. That is the technical shift that opened the door.
Where it is now: AI product videos
Today an affiliate can make a product video without the product. There are two broad ways to do it:
| General AI video tools | Workflow tools built for TikTok Shop | |
|---|---|---|
| How you ask for a video | Write a prompt, pick a model | Drop a product photo, answer a question or two |
| Who checks the product | You do, on every render | The tool checks, then you review |
| Consistency across posts | Up to you to keep the same person | One saved creator per account |
| Best for | Any kind of video, if you like to prompt | Daily product videos at volume |
FlowFits is one of the workflow tools: it turns one product photo into an 8-second, 1080p vertical video with a saved AI creator, checks it against the product photo, and drops it in a Library with the caption and product link ready. The step-by-step is in how to make AI UGC videos for TikTok Shop, and our comparisons put it next to general AI video apps and hiring creators, honestly.
In practice, the week changes shape. Less time goes to waiting on parcels and filming, and more goes to picking products, testing hooks and reading what worked. A sensible setup is a mix: keep filming the products you have in hand and genuinely like, and use AI videos for the long list of products you want to test without a sample.
The new rules of the new era
The AI era came with guardrails, and a serious affiliate follows them:
- TikTok's AI label. TikTok requires creators to label AI-generated content that contains realistic images, audio or video, and says the label does not affect distribution as long as the video follows its Community Guidelines.
- No fake testimonials. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, in effect since October 21, 2024, covers reviews that claim to come from someone who does not exist, such as AI-generated fake reviews. An AI creator shows the product; it does not review it.
- Disclosure of paid relationships. The FTC expects creators to disclose material connections to the brands they promote, whether the video is filmed or generated.
What stays the same
Strip away the tools and the job is what it always was: find products people want, show them honestly, and post consistently. Human creators are still the best choice for real reviews, true fit and a personality people follow. AI is best at the volume and testing that filming could never keep up with. The affiliates who do well will likely use both where each is strongest.
This is a history of how the work is done, not a promise of results. Earnings depend on the product, the account, the audience and much more, and they vary widely from one affiliate to the next.

Questions
When did the TikTok Shop affiliate program start in the US?
It launched with TikTok Shop on September 12, 2023, when TikTok announced the full US launch, including in-feed shopping, a Shop Tab and an affiliate program for creators.
Do TikTok Shop affiliates have to film their own videos?
No. Many still do, and filming is best for honest reviews and true fit. Affiliates can also make product videos with AI from the listing photo, labeled as AI-generated under TikTok's rules.
Are free samples still part of TikTok Shop?
Yes. TikTok Shop's Seller University describes free samples, which need seller approval and recent sales, and refundable samples, which do not need approval. Free samples come with an expectation to post within 14 days.
